WATCH: Ballad of a WiFi Hero

(Video link for mobile users)

“For many years, the gentlefolk of these lands basked in a wireless network overflowing with speed and ample internet, flowing like a river into their Compaq Presario. Many happy days did the people spend checking Hotmail and reading USAToday.com.

“But then one gray morning did Internet Explorer 6 no longer load The Google…. The land was thrown into panic.”

So begins “In which I fix My Girlfriend’s Grandparents’ WiFi and Am Hailed As a Conquering Hero.” Watch it through to the end for a very useful tip on what to do when your wi-fi won’t work. (Don’t forget to count to three. Really!)

The video is adapted from the story first published in the literary-humor mag McSweeney’s by Mike Lacher, a maker of videos, Internet experiences and other things – most of them funny and many having something to do with digital technology. The story was a big hit among all those young computer-savvy people who routinely rescue digital immigrants in the family when something goes awry.

If you recognize the voice, it’s because the narrator is H. Jon Benjamin, who’s known for his voice parts on several TV shows including “Family Guy and “Bob’s Burgers” and “Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist.”

Do you have a conquering hero in your family?
