Description

Elder abuse cases are often complex and multifaceted, involving neglect, physical, emotional, sexual, and/ or financial abuse issues. This symposium is intended to enhance federal, state, and local efforts in addressing elder abuse by providing training and resources.

Sessions will cover a broad range of topics that enhance federal, state, and local efforts to address elder abuse through the development of training and resources.   Attendees will learn about the latest information and tools to consider when responding to elder abuse cases.

Session 1: Recognizing and Responding to Elder Abuse

Participants will learn techniques to improve their assessments of vulnerable adults with possible abuse-related injuries and/or living in states of neglect.

    Session 2: Undue Influence and the Law: The Criminal
    Justice System can Help Protect Older Adults

    Presented by J. Barrett Shipp | Personal Injury + Probate Litigation |
    Managing Member of Shipp Ecke, PLLC.

    Undue influence is a particularly disturbing tactic because it can be difficult to detect and prove. Undue influence occurs when people use their power and control to deceive, betray the trust, and exploit the dependencies of others. This workshop will help law enforcement officers, judiciary partners, and aging professionals learn how to recognize the characteristics of Undue Influence.

    Session 3: How the FBI is Addressing Elder Fraud

    The experts say that up to five million older Americans are abused every year, and the annual loss by victims of financial abuse is estimated to be at least 36.5 billion. Participants will learn techniques used by the FBI to address elder fraud in our communities.

    Session 4: Elder Fraud Prosecution

    Presented by David Martin | Elder Fraud Prosecutor, Bexar County
    District Attorney’s Office.

    Session 6: How to Manage Behavioral Changes in Alzheimer‘s and Related Disorders

    Presented by Dr. Jason Schillerstrom, MD | Director of Psychiatry and
    Residency Training Program, UT Health San Antonio.

    This presentation will provide an overview of dementia. Participants will learn strategies for managing difficult behaviors and some communication techniques to use when working with older adults.

    Session 7: “If it’s not Your Money, it’s a Crime!“ APS Financial Exploitation Investigations

    Presented by Stefani Wade | APS, Evidence Driven Subject Matter Expert.

    Financial exploitation allegations present enormous challenges, including determining what happened and providing or arranging protective services to alleviate or prevent further maltreatment. Participants will learn the role of APS in investigating financial exploitation and how APS works with law enforcement.
