Description

Join this Wellness Wednesday group to discuss the different ways you can improve your physical, mental, and social well-being.

This week’s topic – Materializing Physical Embodiment: Somatic Movement and Mark Making

The ephemeral nature of movement in a performance can be touching and rousing. What is the relationship between the other medias of art that result in objects and movement performance? Can building sensitivity to understanding the physical layers of the self be a source of inspiration to make art? In this session, fitness trainer Tina Wang will lead participants through yoga posture informed somatic exercises and give time for people to make art work with materials they have at home.

Tina Wang is a student of Iyengar yoga. She has been teaching Hatha yoga in New York City since 2016. Tina’s classes also draw from her experiences as a dancer and visual artist. In her studies as an Iyengar yoga student, she came across the benefits of pranayama, the restraint and control of breath, the fourth petal of yoga. Thanks to the teachings of Heather Haxo Phillips from Adeline Yoga in Oakland, California, she has developed a consistent pranayama practice. To her, it is an extension of the quiet she gained when practicing the yoga postures or asanas. On top of that quiet, pranayama allows her to cultivate an internal focus. Within that focus, she is able to examine her internal motivations and abilities for leading a meaningful life while armoring herself against external societal pressures of the mold of a good life.
