After a 35-year career in education, Joanna Choi Kalbus published her first book at age 84. Her memoir, The Boat Not Taken, tells the story of her and her mother’s escape from North Korea and the pair’s journey to the United States. Join us to hear Joanna’s magnificent stories – both those detailed in her debut work as well as her journey writing it.
Joanna’s Bio:
Joanna Choi Kalbus was born in North Korea. She made two critical migrations—escaping to South Korea after the Communist takeover, then immigrating to the United States as a ten-year-old during the Korean War. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of California, Riverside and has worked as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, and regional superintendent. Upon retirement from the California K-12 public school systems, Dr. Kalbus served as a Lecturer in Education at the University of California, Riverside. She lives in Moraga, CA.
