Travel Icon Rick Steves “Visits” Senior Planet!

Senior Planet is excited to welcome renowned television host, best-selling guidebook author, and outspoken activist Rick Steves for a special event July 18 at 2pm ET!

Event: Broadening Our Perspectives Through Travel

Why do people travel? Of course, answers vary from person to person, but some commonly cited reasons are: to sightsee, to relax, to experience food/music/art, to connect with one’s heritage, to learn a new culture, to escape less favorable weather, and simply to have fun.

However, there’s one travel expert who believes there’s more to travel than good food and fun in the sun.  In this special Zoom session, guidebook author and TV host Rick Steves discusses traveling for the purpose of gaining empathy while sharing lessons he’s learned from exploring the world.

Lessons Learned in Travel

By venturing out of their comfort zone, travelers can gain an empathy for the other 96 percent of humanity and a better understanding of the interconnectedness of today’s world. In this provocative slideshow lecture, Rick draws from lessons learned while exploring Europe, Central America, Asia, and the Middle East to illustrate how, when Americans travel, they can come home with the greatest of all souvenirs: a broader perspective.

“Over the years I’ve enjoyed learning how for a good traveler ‘age only matters if you’re a cheese’ and ‘it’s never too late to have a happy childhood’, says Rick. “And with my upcoming talk, now that I’m ‘in my 70s’, I’m excited to explain how and why.”

It has been over 40 years since Rick taught his first travel class, and he is bringing his decades of experience to Senior Planet in an informative and provocative program rooted in his “why.”
