Courses at the NYC Senior Planet Exploration Center

Senior Planet offers a range of free 5- and 10-week digital technology courses at our Exploration Center for people age 60 and up. Most courses meet twice per week. Registration takes place on a quarterly basis in person only at the center, located at 127 West 25th Street in Manhattan.

Registration for the fall quarter will occur on September 26 and 27.  Currently, all courses are waitlisted.  The fall quarter will run October 2 — December 8.  See below for information on the courses offered and how to register.

The course schedule for the winter quarter will be posted in early December.  Registration will occur on January 3, 4, and 5.

    All courses are currently waitlisted with the exception of Beyond the Basics (Spanish), Chrome Essentials, and Ready, Set, Bank: Online Banking Made Easy.  To be added to the waitlist, please visit the center or give us a call.  You will be notified within the first two weeks of the quarter if a spot becomes available.  

    Registration for fall courses was held in person on Tuesday, September 26 and Wednesday, September 27.  All courses are free.

    How to Register

    • Registration is in person only at the Senior Planet Exploration Center.
    • Please note that you can only be enrolled in one course per quarter.
    • New members must fill out a Senior Planet membership form, including contact information and basic demographic data.
    • You’ll be notified on the day you register if you can be placed in your requested class or have been wait listed.
    • Wait listed members will be contacted if and when a space becomes available.
    • During the registration period, please check the course status noted above. Courses that have filled will be noted as FULL and updated as often as possible. You can still register after a course becomes full, but you will be wait listed.

  • BEYOND THE BASICS*

    10-week course – Fall quarter

    • Mondays & Wednesdays, 2:00 – 3:15pm

    • Spanish Language: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 11:45am – 1:00pm

    This PC-based course expands on the concepts and skills taught in the Computer Basics course and covers the use of the Internet as an everyday resource for practical and enriching activities for socialization, entertainment, and life-management. You’ll learn about social networking, online shopping, online banking, health management, entertainment, and how to use the Internet for different types of research. You’ll also learn the basics of social networking, how to protect your personal information, and ways to explore and cultivate your interests online. This course is a good opportunity to raise your comfort level and expand your ability to use computers to improve and enrich your daily life.

    Computer experience prerequisite: Some comfort with using email, navigating websites and searching for information on the Internet.

  • CHROME BASICS (formerly Internet Basics - Chrome Devices)

    10-week course – Not offered in the fall quarter

    In this course, you’ll learn the basics of how to use a computer to navigate the Internet in ways that can enrich your life. You’ll learn how to use email; search the Internet for information; access sources of entertainment; and connect to people, organizations and interests that matter to you.

    This course uses Chromebooks; Chrombooks are a type of laptop that are great for beginners who just want to use the Internet without a lot of bells and whistles (or troublesome issues!). Chromebooks are fast, secure and cost-effective computers that run the Google Chrome operating system.  They are also significantly less expensive than other devices and offer a great option if you are on a tight budget.

    Computer experience prerequisite: None. This course is designed for people who have never used a computer or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

  • CHROME ESSENTIALS & DIGITAL CULTURE*

    10 week course – Fall quarter

    • Mondays & Wednesdays, 11:45am – 1:00pm

    This pilot program will cover the essentials of how to use the basic functions of a Chromebook laptop, how to navigate the Internet, and how to send and receive email. The second half of this course, “Digital Culture,” will focus on applying the skills learned during the first five weeks in a purposeful way. Participants will explore how to use online resources in their everyday lives and the many ways digital culture can meaningfully impact their lives.  By the end of this course, participants will know how to connect more easily, avoid scams and fraud, identify reliable resources for health research, and virtually attend events and museums.

    Computer experience prerequisite:  None. This course is designed for people who have never used a laptop or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

  • COMPUTER BASICS*

    Computer experience prerequisite:  None. This course is designed for people who have never used a computer or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

  • COMPUTER BASICS - SPANISH LANGUAGE

    En este curso basado en la computadora personal, Ud. va a aprender cómo usar la computadora y navegar el Internet en maneras que enriquecen su vida. Durante la clase, aprenderá comunicar por email, buscar información en el Internet, descubrir varios formas de entretenimiento y conectar a personas, organizaciones y cosas de interés que le importan.

     El requisito previo con computadoras: sin requisito previo. Este curso está concebido para adultos mayores que no han usado una computadora o tienen muy poca experiencia y también desean una introducción sólida.

    This pilot program will cover the essentials of how to use the basic functions of a personal computer, how to navigate the Internet, and how to send and receive email.   • CONNECT

    25-week course – Not available this quarter

    Connect!, a new six-month program designed to help older adults increase their connections with family, friends, and community by learning to use new technology.  As a part of the Connect! program, you will:

    • Learn many technology skills.  By the end of the program you will be able to use an iPad to send email, browse the web, make video calls, and take pictures.
    • Build your linkages to people, communities, and your own life goals.  As a capstone project, you will create a digital scrapbook that can be shared with friends and family.
    • Get involved in classroom training and group events.
    • You will be loaned an iPad to use both in the classroom and at home.

    Computer experience prerequisite: None. This course is designed for people who have never used a computer or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

  • CREATING YOUR OWN WEBSITE WITH WIX.COM*

    10-week course – Fall quarter

    • Fridays, 2:45 – 4:45pm

    Our instructors will walk you through everything you need to know in order to create your own beautiful, professional and functional website.

    Computer experience prerequisite: You’ll need to feel comfortable working with computers and have your own email address; be able to fill out online forms, do basic web searches, and upload and download documents and photographs with some assistance; and, most important, have a great idea for a website!

  • FREE YOUR PHOTOS*

    5-week course- Fall quarter

    Runs November 7 – December 5

    • Tuesdays & Thursdays, 2:00 – 3:15pm

    This slightly more advanced digital photography course will lead you step by step through the process of creating a personalized photo album.
    Note: If you wish to print your photo book you will have to cover that cost by paying the fee directly to the online service “Shutterfly.” (Book costs range from $15 to $50.) You can create an online album if you do not wish to print a book.

    Computer experience prerequisite: You need to already be able to use a computer to send and receive emails, organize files, navigate websites and shop online.

    Other requirements: Access to a digital camera or smartphone, the cable to connect it to the computer, and a memory card for the camera. It would also be very helpful if you have at least one USB drive to work with.

  • INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY*

    5 week course – Fall quarter

    Runs October 3 – November 1.

    • Tuesdays & Thursdays, 2:00 – 3:15pm

    This course covers the basics of using a digital camera, transferring pictures to a computer, sharing pictures online with friends and relatives and printing pictures at a neighborhood photo kiosk or drugstore.

    Note: Digital cameras are provided on the premises for use in the class.

    Computer experience prerequisite:  Participants should have basic computer skills and be comfortable using a mouse, keyboard, and have some understanding of file management on PCs.

  • INTRODUCTION TO THE NEXUS TABLET

    10-week course
    Not available this quarter

    Get an introduction to Google’s popular Nexus tablet. Nexus tablets are less expensive than iPads and work well with all things Google (like Gmail). With hands-on support, you’ll learn the basics of the tablet and how to use it to browse the web, use email, download apps, watch video, take pictures, connect online and more.

    Note: Nexus tablets will be provided for use at Senior Planet.

    Computer experience prerequisite:  This is a beginner class and will be geared toward new learners who are not already comfortable using a computer.

  • IPAD BASICS*

    10-week course – Fall quarter

    • Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:15 – 11:30am
    • Tuesdays & Thursdays, 2:00 – 3:15pm

    Get an introduction to the popular Apple tablet. With hands-on support, you’ll learn the basics of the iPad and how to use it to browse the web, use email, download apps, watch videos, take pictures, connect online and more.

    Note: iPads will be provided for use at Senior Planet.

    Computer experience prerequisite: This is a course that is appropriate for absolute beginners.

  • IPAD ESSENTIALS & DIGITAL CULTURE*

  • IPAD BASICS - INDEPENDENT LEARNING

    10 week course – Not offered this quarter

    iPad Basics—Independent Learning is a new program designed to let you learn how to use the iPad at your own pace.  We are seeking motivated individuals to take part in this new blended learning experience.  During iPad Basics—Independent Learning, you will learn how to browse the Internet, download apps, and send emails on the iPad.  You will watch video lessons, complete interactive activities, and quiz yourself to test what you’ve learned on your own time.  Once a week you’ll meet with a trainer and other students.

    This course may be a good fit for you if:

    • You have little to no knowledge of the iPad, but want to learn.
    • Are able to access websites and send email.
    • Have access to high speed Internet (either at home or at a nearby library).

    You will receive an iPad to use both in the classroom and at home for the duration of the course.

  • MONEY MATTERS

    10-week course – Not offered this quarter.

    Learn about smart financial habits, introduce yourself to online resources, develop skills to help manage your money, reduce spending, and help identify income opportunities outside the traditional workforce. By the end of this course, participants will have the know-how to maximize their incomes, make a budget, do online price comparison, and leverage online resources to save money and earn extra income.

  • READY, SET, BANK: ONLINE BANKING MADE EASY*

    5-week course – Fall quarter

    October 2 – November 1.

    • Mondays & Wednesdays, 11:45am – 1:00pm

    Ready, Set, Bank is a new program designed to help older adults access the benefits of online and mobile banking.  The course includes a series of video lesson plans that explain online and mobile banking basics.  Members will learn how to navigate mobile banking apps, set up alerts about account activity to help protect from identity theft, and enroll in direct deposit for social security or retirement benefits.

    Prerequisites: You’ll need to feel comfortable working with computers and have your own email address.
  • SENIOR PLANET U - IPAD BASICS*

    5-week course – Fall quarter

    Runs October 3 – November 2.

    • Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10:15 – 11:30am

    This 5-week course covers the basic skills required to become comfortable using the iPad. This course differs from our traditional iPad Basics in that the primary instructional content is delivered via video lessons, designed to be paired with hands-on activities and in-person instruction. Senior Planet U–our brand new online learning platform–hosts our video lessons and online materials, which participants will continue to have access to after the completion of the course. We are seeking motivated individuals who will actively participate in the feedback process and help shape the course and how Senior Planet U can be integrated in other courses.

    Prerequisites: Participants must have an email address and should have some basic experience browsing the Internet.

  • SOCIAL MEDIA*

    5-week course – Fall quarter

    November 6 – December 6.

    • Monday & Wednesday, 11:45am – 1:00pm

    This course – designed for intermediate computer users – will take you through many of the most popular social media tools used worldwide by internet users of all ages, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more. The course is best suited for those who have already taken the Senior Planet Beyond the Basics course, or for those who already know how to use email and the Internet and search for information, and understand how to protect their personal information online.

    Computer experience prerequisite: Ability to use email comfortably, navigate websites and search for information on the Internet.

  • TEAM SENIOR PLANET*

    10-week course – Fall quarter

    • Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays 8:30 – 10:00am
    • Mondays, Wednesdays,  1:00 – 2:30pm & Fridays, 11:30am – 1:00pm

    An additional lecture will be held on Fridays from 10:15 – 11:15am.  Participants will participate in a mix of aerobic, low-impact, and strength training exercises, and learn how to use the Fitbit to track their movements and heart rate. Fitbits will be loaned to each participant.

    Sessions will be held at and around the Senior Planet Exploration Center. Instructors will teach proper exercise technique and body awareness. Individuals at all levels of fitness are welcome.

    Prerequisites: You’ll need to feel comfortable working with computers and have your own email address; membership ($25 per year for adults aged 62+) to the NYC Parks Recreation Centers is required.  A doctor’s note is recommended.
