Senior Planet Montgomery Course Information

Senior Planet Montgomery offers a range of free 5- and 10-week digital technology courses for people age 60 and up at various locations in Montgomery County. Most courses meet twice per week, and class size is limited to 12 participants. Pre-registration is required for all of our multi-week courses.

This 5-week course is designed to help you understand online banking and decide if it might be right for you. The course includes a series of video lessons that explain online and mobile banking basics. You will learn how to navigate bank websites, set up alerts about account activity to help protect from identity theft, and enroll in direct deposit for social security or retirement benefits.

Prerequisites: You must have an email address that you use. You should also be comfortable navigating websites and searching for information on the internet.

The goal of this intensive 10-week course is to help you get your small business off the ground. In this course you will design a logo, learn the basics of branding and social media marketing, list your products or services online, and start a GoFundMe campaign to help raise funds. This course is most appropriate for small business owners and those who already have a business idea.

Prerequisites: You must have an email address that you use. You should also be comfortable using an iPad to navigate websites, search for information on the internet, and upload and download files.

This 10-week course sets the foundation for a safe exercise program. The class explores basic exercises, nutrition, and mental health. It is best suited for those who are new to wellness and exercising. During the first five weeks, you will learn to use an iPad and other technologies to gain a basic understanding of physical activity, nutrition, and stress management. Classroom sessions will also include movement to help you learn about the body and how to stay fit. During the second half of this course, “Work Out!,” you will engage in a mix of aerobic and strength training exercises, gain knowledge of proper exercise form. Classroom-based training will focus on technology including how to use a Fitbit to track movements, heart rate, and food intake. Fitbits will be loaned for use during the second five weeks.

Prerequisites: This course is best suited for those who are new to wellness and exercising. You must have an email address that you use. You should also be somewhat comfortable navigating websites and searching for information on the internet.

In this 10-week course, you’ll learn the basics of how to operate the Apple iPad and navigate the internet in ways that can enrich your life. During the course, you’ll learn how to take pictures, use email, search the internet for information, download apps, and connect to people, organizations and interests that matter to you. iPads will be provided for use in class.

Prerequisites: None. This course is designed for people who have never used an iPad or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

This 5-week course explores the growing role of the internet in everyday life. By the end of this course, you’ll know how to connect more easily, avoid scams and fraud, identify reliable health resources, and virtually attend cultural events and museum exhibits. In other words, you will have a better understanding of digital culture! This course will also give you the chance to meaningfully practice skills that you learned in a Basics or Essentials course.

Prerequisites: This course is taught on the iPad, which is Apple’s tablet. You should have already taken iPad Basics or iPad Essentials, or be somewhat comfortable using a touchscreen on a tablet or smartphone. You must also have an email address.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a foundation for using a computer and the internet to enrich your life. We highly recommend that you follow Computer Essentials with Introduction to Digital Culture for PCs, which will offer additional practice.

Prerequisites: None. This course is designed for people who have never used a computer or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.
