Thank you to everyone who participated in our discussion both in the comments section of SPC and the articles on the website and at our meeting with the author over Zoom about A Rising Man by Abir Mukherjee.
Now it is time to select our next reading!
Each Tuesday, we’ll post a thread here on seniorplanet.org inviting you to comment on each section of the book. Then, during our final week of reading, we’ll host a group discussion over Zoom.
But first! We’ve put together a shortlist of engaging books suggested by our participants, Supporters, and staff. Now it’s up to you to pick which one we’ll read together next! Read on for details about each book, then take the poll at the end and tell us: What should the Senior Planet Book Club read next?
We’ll announce the result of the poll next Tuesday!

The Books:
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley
“As a biracial, unenrolled tribal member and the product of a scandal, Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in—both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. When her family is struck by tragedy, Daunis puts her dreams on hold to care for her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie, the charming new recruit on her brother’s hockey team. After Daunis witnesses a shocking murder that thrusts her into a criminal investigation, she agrees to go undercover. But the deceptions—and deaths—keep piling up and soon the threat strikes too close to home. How far will she go to protect her community if it means tearing apart the only world she’s ever known?” – GoodReads.com
Infinite Country by Patricia Engel
“At the dawn of the new millennium, Colombia is a country devastated by half a century of violence. Elena and Mauro are teenagers when they meet, their blooming love an antidote to the mounting brutality of life in Bogotá. Once their first daughter is born, and facing grim economic prospects, they set their sights on the United States. They travel to Houston and send wages back to Elena’s mother, all the while weighing whether to risk overstaying their tourist visas or to return to Bogotá. As their family expands, and they move again and again, their decision to ignore their exit dates plunges the young family into the precariousness of undocumented status, the threat of discovery menacing a life already strained. When Mauro is deported, Elena, now tasked with caring for their three small children, makes a difficult choice that will ease her burdens but splinter the family even further.” – GoodReads.com
“Afi Tekple is a young seamstress whose life is narrowing rapidly. She lives in a small town in Ghana with her widowed mother, spending much of her time in her uncle Pious’s house with his many wives and children. Then one day she is offered a life-changing opportunity—a proposal of marriage from the wealthy family of Elikem Ganyo, a man she doesn’t truly know. She acquiesces, but soon realizes that Elikem is not quite the catch he seemed. He sends a stand-in to his own wedding, and only weeks after Afi is married and installed in a plush apartment in the capital city of Accra does she meet her new husband. It turns out that he is in love with another woman, whom his family disapproves of; Afi is supposed to win him back on their behalf. But it is Accra that eventually wins Afi’s heart and gives her a life of independence that she never could have imagined for herself. A brilliant scholar and a fierce advocate for women’s rights, author Peace Adzo Medie infuses her debut novel with intelligence and humor. For readers of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Candice Carty-Williams, His Only Wife is the story of an indomitable and relatable heroine that illuminates what it means to be a woman in a rapidly changing world.” – GoodReads.com

I am interested in joining Senior Planet’s book club. How do I join? What is the current selection?
Hi Carol, we would love to have you. This month’s choice will be announced tomorrow and the article will be updated every week with more information about when we meet over zoom.
I am so grateful to have come across this website and the Senior Planet Book Club. Starved for interaction with Seniors who want to remain active.
Now that summer is behind me and vacay’s have slowed I am looking forward to once again attend the monthly bookclub meetups. I have kept up with listening to all the readings. They have been awesome. Hope to see you later this month. Sandra M
So happy to have you back Sandra and hope you had a great summer!
Yes, I will be back also. The selections are great and I look forward to the
ideas of the group. Thanks to all who contribute and lead.
Excited to have you back, Donna!
Hello, I am seeking an virtual book club for my mom to join. Does this group meet virtually? Many thanks!
Hi Camille, yes it does. Hope your mom can join us. I will be posting this month’s choice later today.
Little Fires Everywhere have been on my lists of books to read for some time. However, His Only Wife seems like a very good read. Looking forward to joining the club.
Little Fires has been on my list as well, Yvoonne. Stay tuned for this month’s choice :) I will be posting the article later today and hope to see you at our discussion.
It’s been a while since I joined the book club. I’m looking forward to Reading and discussing another book!
So happy to have you back, Lois.
Next book looks good, thank you.
Another book suggestion:
The Old Woman With the Knife
Hi Elaine, so happy you like this month’s choices. We will add your suggestion to the list!
Two strong educational suggestions of substance-
Dr. Colleen Huber (author): “Neither Safe nor Effective: Evidence Against Covid Vaccines” and-
Peter & Ginger Breggen (authors): “Covid-19 and the Global Predators; We Are the Prey”
Look where we (as a Country) are, and what we’ve allowed to happen. New York in ruins (at the hands of the electorate) while continuing to spiral out of control.
I have read “His Only Wife” with another book club. It was really s good read. :-)
Kate
Hi Kate, so happy to hear this! Hope you will join our discussion later this month :)
