Senior Planet offers a range of free 5- and 10-week digital technology courses that require advance registration, as well as weekly tech-themed events, workshops and lectures.  See the Events Calendar below for programming.

SUMMER QUARTER COURSES

This 5-week course covers the essentials of how to use the basic functions of a personal computer, how to navigate the internet, and how to send and receive email. By the end of the course, you’ll have a foundation for using a computer and the internet to enrich your life. We highly recommend that you follow Computer Essentials with Introduction to Digital Culture for PCs, which will offer additional practice.

Prerequisites: None. This course is designed for people who have never used a computer or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

This 5-week course will cover the essentials of how to use the popular Apple tablet. Learn how to navigate the Internet and how to send and receive email. By the end of the course, you’ll have a basic foundation for using an iPad and the Internet to enrich your life. 

Computer experience prerequisite:  None. This course is designed for people who have never used an iPad or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

Note: iPads will be provided for use at Senior Planet.

This PC-based course expands on the concepts and skills taught in the Computer Basics course and covers use of the Internet as an everyday resource for practical and enriching activities for socialization, entertainment and life-management. You’ll learn about social networking, online shopping, online banking, health management, entertainment, and how to use the Internet for different types of research. You’ll also learn the basics of social networking, how to protect your personal information, and ways to explore and cultivate your interests online. This course is a good opportunity to raise your comfort level and expand your ability to use computers to improve and enrich your daily life.


Computer experience prerequisite: Some comfort with using email, navigating websites and searching for information on the Internet.

This 10-week course will help you gain the skills and knowledge to search for jobs and succeed in the workforce in the digital age. You’ll learn how to age proof your resume, how to write a modern resume and cover letter using Google docs templates, and how to use job search websites. The course also covers tips for writing professional emails, emailing attachments, uploading files, and how to ace a video interview.

Prerequisites: You must have an email address that you use. You should also be comfortable using a computer to navigate websites and search for information on the Internet.

This 5-week course explores the growing role of the internet in everyday life. By the end of this course, you’ll know how to connect more easily, avoid scams and fraud, identify reliable health resources, and virtually attend cultural events and museum exhibits. In other words, you will have a better understanding of digital culture! This course will also give you the chance to meaningfully practice skills that you learned in a Basics or Essentials course.

Prerequisites: This course is taught on the Chromebook, which is a type of laptop. You should have already taken Chrome Basics or Chrome Essentials, or be somewhat comfortable using any laptop with a trackpad. You must also have an email address.

This 5-week course will take you through many of the most popular social media tools used worldwide by internet users of all ages, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more. It gives an introduction to the platforms so that you can learn more about the way they are changing the way we communicate with each other.

This five-week course will meet three times a week* and cover the essentials of healthy aging. It is for those who are new to wellness and exercise. You’ll use an iPad to learn about different resources for physical activity, diet, and stress management. Movements sessions each week will help you gain body awareness and learn exercises to stay fit. By the end of the course, you’ll have a basic foundation for using the iPad and an understanding of how lifestyle choices affect your well being. *May meet twice a week in some locations.

Prerequisites: This course is best suited for someone who is new to wellness and exercise. You must have an email address that you use. You should also be somewhat comfortable navigating websites and searching for information on the internet.

This 10-week course aims to empower older adults as changemakers by teaching key leadership skills and strengthening analytical abilities. You will improve your online research skills, collaborate through Google docs and calendar, and use Twitter and other civic tech to reach elected representatives. At the same time, you’ll explore conflict management, increase your self-awareness, and improve your communication skills. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to combine your technology and advocacy skills to develop a campaign for social change. Prerequisites: You must have an email address that you use. You should also be comfortable using a computer to navigate websites and search for information on the internet.

Prerequisite: Basic use of internet searches, email use, and a passion for community change/ civic engagement.
