Senior Planet North Country Exploration Center Events & Courses

Senior Planet offers a range of free 5- and 10-week digital technology courses that require advance registration, as well as weekly tech-themed events, workshops and lectures.  See the Events calendar below for workshops and other open sessions.  For courses and events at the Malone Adult Center, click here.

REGISTRATION

Register for the winter quarter on January 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th from 10:00am-5:00pm at the North Country Senior Planet Exploration Center (located in the Champlain Centre). Classes fill on a first-come, first-serve basis; to be placed on a waitlist, please call 518-566-4422. You will be notified of open seats in the first two weeks of the course.

The winter quarter will run from January 14th – March 22nd

Winter Quarter Courses

Mondays & Wednesdays, 9:00 – 10:00am

This five-week course will meet three times a week and cover the essentials of healthy aging. You’ll use an iPad to explore how physical activity, diet and stress management promote wellness. Movements sessions each week will help you gain body awareness and learn exercises to stay fit. By the end of the course, you’ll have a basic foundation for using the iPad and an understanding of how lifestyle choices affect your wellbeing.

Prerequisite: You must have an email address that you use. You should also be somewhat comfortable navigating websites and searching for information on the Internet.

Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:15 – 11:30am

Get an introduction to the popular Apple tablet. With hands-on support, you’ll learn the basics of the iPad and how to use it to browse the web, use email, download apps, watch video, take pictures, connect online and more.

Note: iPads will be provided for use at Senior Planet.

Computer experience prerequisite: This is a course that is appropriate for absolute beginners.

Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:15 – 11:30am

This course covers the basics of web design and reviews important terminology. Participants sign up for Wix accounts and are guided through a step-by-step process for how to build a website and learn how to effectively promote their websites. This is a PC-based course.

Computer experience prerequisite: You’ll need to feel comfortable working with computers and have your own email address; be able to fill out online forms, do basic web searches, and upload and download documents and photographs with some assistance; and, most important, have a great idea for a website!

Mondays & Wednesdays, 1:00 – 2:15pm

This course – designed for intermediate computer users – will take you through many of the most popular social media tools used worldwide by internet users of all ages, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more. The course is best suited for those who have already taken the Senior Planet Beyond the Basics course, or for those who already know how to use email and the Internet and search for information, and understand how to protect their personal information online.

 

Computer experience prerequisite:Ability to use email comfortably, navigate websites and search for information on the Internet.

Mondays & Wednesdays, 1:00 – 2:15pm

This slightly more advanced digital photography course will lead you step by step through the process of creating a personalized photo album.

Note: If you wish to print your photo book you will have to cover that cost by paying the fee directly to the online service “Shutterfly.” (Book costs range from $15 to $50.) You can create an online album if you do not wish to print a book.

 

Computer experience prerequisite: You need to already be able to use a computer to send and receive emails, organize files, navigate websites and shop online.

 

Other requirements: Access to a digital camera or smartphone, the cable to connect it to the computer, and a memory card for the camera. It would also be very helpful if you have at least one USB drive to work with.

Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10:15- 11:30am

This ten-week course will explore how technology impacts society and our interactions with one another. You’ll learn to use popular social networking sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. If you’re interested in how technology is changing how we read the news, manage our health information, meet other people, and find entertainment, then this course is for you. This course is best suited for those who have basic knowledge of the iPad and an email address.

 

Computer experience prerequisite: Participants will have an email address and basic familiarity with the iPad (meaning you are comfortable using a touchscreen and virtual keyboard to do web searches and operate an email account.)

Tuesday & Thursday, 1:00 – 2:15pm

This course expands on the skills and concepts taught in Computer Basics and addresses how to use the Internet as an everyday resource, for practical and enriching activities for socialization, entertainment and life-management. Topics covered include: social networking, online shopping, online banking, health management, entertainment, how to use the Internet for different types of research, how to protect your personal information, and ways to explore and cultivate your interests online.

Computer experience prerequisite: Some comfort with using email, navigating websites and searching for information on the Internet.

Tuesdays & Thursdays, 1:00 – 2:15pm

This course teaches smart financial habits and introduces members to online resources to help them better manage their finances, reduce spending, and help identify income opportunities outside of the traditional workforce. Topics covered include: making a budget, online banking, online payment services, online shopping, online entertainment, and entrepreneurial opportunities.
