New York City

Find WiFi – and Senior Planet – on city streets

Between now and October 24, if you are visiting NYC or outside your neighborhood and need a quick recharge or WiFi – without buying a coffee – just look for one of a series of kiosks scattered around the five boroughs called LinkNYC (info here)…and you might see a message from Senior Planet.

LinkNYC kiosks provide high-speed WiFi, phone calls to anywhere in the U.S., device charging, a touch screen tablet for access to city services, maps and directions, and a 911 Emergency Call button. All these services are free to use. Kiosks also have two 55” high-definition digital screens used for public service announcements and advertising.

LinkNYC is a first-of-its-kind communications network that will replace over 7,500 pay phones across the five boroughs.  To set up your phone to obtain free WiFi, you must follow the steps here.

OATS approached LinkNYC for permission to run the campaign as part of OATS’ efforts partnering with Age Friendly NYC to encourage advocacy through social media.

Senior Planet’s Allison Adams, Program Manager approached LinkNYC to participate; she developed the content and copy along with a team of colleagues at Senior Planet/Older Adults Technology Services.  The eye-catching designs were done by graphic designer Elke Aspillera.

“We wanted to choose facts and statistics that were fun, interesting, and somehow tied into the larger Senior Planet themes of empowerment, purpose, and impact,” explains Allison Adams.  “The ads feature facts about technology, but the message is about how the viewer can leverage that technology — and how joining Senior Planet could help them get started.”

“New York City has a growing aging population, and it’s more important than ever for our seniors to connect with technology resources to stay in touch with family and friends, and access important services,” notes Ruth Fasoldt, Director of External Affairs, Links.  “LinkNYC is proud to partner with Senior Planet on their campaign to reach seniors throughout the five boroughs and get them online. With 1,700 Links across the city and more than 5 million users, we are excited to support the cause and spread the word!”

As you walk around the city, keep an eye peeled for Senior Planet’s messages at kiosks throughout the city, in all five boroughs.  Don’t be shy…send pics of you posing with our kiosk message “in the wild” and we’ll post them!
