How to Use Google Like a Pro and Make Your Life Easy

Last week, I answered a question about how to use Google to search effectively for information across the Internet (click here to check out last week’s Tech Tip).

This week, I’m going to show you some special tricks that Google has up its sleeve.

Did you know that Google can do fast and simple calculations, find dates and provide speedy information about your medications? The best part: The answers show up right under or to the right of the search bar, so you don’t have to look through search results or do any clicking.

Here’s how it works.

Measurement Conversions

You’re in the middle of a recipe and wondering how many ounces are in a pint: Google has a built-in converter for different units of measurement, including height, weight and volume. Just enter the number and units into the search bar, and the answer appears right below.

Or perhaps you have some foreign currency and you would like to know how much it is worth in American dollars. Google has a currency converter so you can figure out the conversion rate. Just type in something like this.

Google can provide you brief summaries and descriptions for most US prescription drugs, both generic and brand name. Just type the name into the search box. This information will show up on the right side of the screen.

Flight Arrival Times

If a friend or family member is flying in and you’d like to know the status of their flight, all you have to do is type the name of the airline and the flight number into the Google search bar. You can quickly find out if the flight is scheduled to leave on time, is delayed, or is arriving early. Google will also tell you the exact terminal where the flight will arrive.

Holidays and Dates

If you’re like me, you frequently mix up holidays, and you can never remember their exact dates. Fortunately, Google can help you out. Just type in the holiday and year. It’ll tell you what day of the week the holiday falls on, too. Too bad Google can’t remember your best friend’s birthday!

Math Problems

If you need to figure out a percentage or perform a simple calculation, don’t worry about trying to find your calculator. Google has a built-in calculator that can add, subtract, multiply and divide. Just use the numbers on your keyboard to type in the calculation you would like to perform. Google will provide you the answer.

Google has a built-in dictionary that can provide you the definition of a word, its synonyms and even its pronunciation – just click on the little speaker icon Screen Shot 2013-05-20 at 1.10.29 AMto hear the word pronounced.

Don’t worry if you’re not completely sure how to spell the word you’re looking to define. Google can help with that, too. If you type in the wrong spelling of a word into the search bar, Google will try to find the closest correct spelling for the word you might be looking for.
