This week’s topic: House Dancing
House Music is the evolution of the Disco Music scene of the 1970’s with influences from African rhythms, Jazz melodies, Latin music and the soulful singing style of Gospel Music. Any and all dance styles can be considered HOUSE as long as one maintains the beat with one’s movements. House music culture is one of acceptance of all people as is witnessed at all its events. People of different cultures, different religions, all ages from teens to seniors, and persons from the LGBTQ+ community are all well represented. The only common attribute to all is “We are all here to DANCE!”
Lafayette “Lafi” Vargas has been a lifelong martial artist, musician, and recreational dancer. One of his greatest passions has been the NYC HOUSE MUSIC clubbing scene. In addition to being a tai-chi and self-defense instructor, and also a Brazilian percussionist, he has shared his love for dance with many people. As part of the HOUSE COALITION, a group that helped repeal the racist and sexist Cabaret Laws of NYC, Lafi gave a speech at New York’s City Hall that greatly influenced all political parties present.
