Memorial Day honors and remembers all military personnel who died in the service of our country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

There are observations at different times throughout the metropolitan area to honor to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

In Central Park you can see a memorial service at the Soldiers and Sailor’s Monument at 10am at Riverside Drive and W 89th street; at 11am there’s a ceremony at the USS Intrepid at Pier 86 (details here); Black Veterans for Social Justice hosts the Bedford Stuyvesant’s 8th Memorial Day Parade and Stand-Down from 11am-4pm, call 718-852-6004 x221 for more information.

The largest and oldest (150+ years) continuous Memorial Day observance takes place in Brooklyn (details here) with a parade, bagpipes, a 21 gun salute and the playing of “Taps.”  It kicks off at 11am at 78th St and Third Ave, marching up to Fourth Ave and ends at John Paul Jones Park on 101st for the memorial service.
