Senior Planet offers a range of free 5- and 10-week digital technology courses that require advance registration, as well as weekly tech-themed events, workshops and lectures.  See the Events Calendar below for programming.

FALL QUARTER COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 

This 5-week course covers the essentials of how to use the basic functions of a personal computer, how to navigate the internet, and how to send and receive email. By the end of the course, you’ll have a foundation for using a computer and the internet to enrich your life. We highly recommend that you follow Computer Essentials with Introduction to Digital Culture for PCs, which will offer additional practice.

Prerequisites: None. This course is designed for people who have never used a computer or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

In this 10-week, PC-based course, you’ll learn the basics of how to operate a computer and navigate the internet in ways that can enrich your life. During the course, you’ll learn how to use email, search the internet for information, access sources of entertainment, and connect to people, organizations and interests that matter to you.

Prerequisites: None. This course is designed for people who have never used a computer or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

In this 10-week course, you’ll learn about smart financial habits, develop skills to help manage your money, use online resources to find benefits, and save money online. This course is much more than budgeting! By the end of this course, you will also know how to shop online to find the best deals, search for flights and hotels on the internet, access movies and music, and earn extra income.

Prerequisites: You must have an email address that you use. You should also be comfortable using an PC to navigate websites and search for information on the internet.

This 5-week course will cover the essentials of how to use the popular Apple tablet. Learn how to navigate the Internet and how to send and receive email. By the end of the course, you’ll have a basic foundation for using an iPad and the Internet to enrich your life. We highly recommend that you follow iPad Essentials with Introduction to Digital Culture – iPad, which will offer additional practice.

Computer experience prerequisite:  None. This course is designed for people who have never used an iPad or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

Note: iPads will be provided for use at Senior Planet.

This 5-week course will cover the essentials of how to use the Chromebook. Learn how to navigate the Internet and how to send and receive email. By the end of the course, you’ll have a basic foundation for using a Chrome device and the Internet to enrich your life. We highly recommend that you follow Chrome Essentials with Introduction to Digital Culture – Chrome, which will offer additional practice.

Computer experience prerequisite:  None. This course is designed for people who have never used a Chromebook or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

Note: Chromebooks will be provided for use at Senior Planet.

This PC-based course expands on the concepts and skills taught in the Computer Basics course and covers use of the Internet as an everyday resource for practical and enriching activities for socialization, entertainment and life-management. You’ll learn about social networking, online shopping, online banking, health management, entertainment, and how to use the Internet for different types of research. You’ll also learn the basics of social networking, how to protect your personal information, and ways to explore and cultivate your interests online. This course is a good opportunity to raise your comfort level and expand your ability to use computers to improve and enrich your daily life.

Computer experience prerequisite: Some comfort with using email, navigating websites and searching for information on the Internet.

This 10-week course will help you gain the skills and knowledge to search for jobs and succeed in the workforce in the digital age. You’ll learn how to age proof your resume, how to write a modern resume and cover letter using Google docs templates, and how to use job search websites. The course also covers tips for writing professional emails, emailing attachments, uploading files, and how to ace a video interview.

Prerequisites: You must have an email address that you use. You should also be comfortable using a computer to navigate websites and search for information on the Internet.

This 5-week course explores the growing role of the internet in everyday life. By the end of this course, you’ll know how to connect more easily, avoid scams and fraud, identify reliable health resources, and virtually attend cultural events and museum exhibits. In other words, you will have a better understanding of digital culture! This course will also give you the chance to meaningfully practice skills that you learned in a Basics or Essentials course.

Prerequisites: This course is taught on the Chromebook, which is a type of laptop. You should have already taken Chrome Basics or Chrome Essentials, or be somewhat comfortable using any laptop with a trackpad. You must also have an email address.

This 5-week course will take you through many of the most popular social media tools used worldwide by internet users of all ages, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more. It gives an introduction to the platforms so that you can learn more about the way they are changing the way we communicate with each other.

Prerequisites: You must have an email address that you use. You should also be comfortable using an iPad to navigate websites and search for information on the internet.

This 5-week course is designed to help you understand online banking and decide if it might be right for you. The course includes a series of video lessons that explain online and mobile banking basics. You will learn how to navigate bank websites, set up alerts about account activity to help protect from identity theft, and enroll in direct deposit for social security or retirement benefits.

Prerequisites: You must have an email address that you use. You should also be comfortable navigating websites and searching for information on the internet.
