“Regular Singing” by Richard Nelson
Opening on the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination, “Regular Singing” is the final chapter in Nelson’s Apple Family dramatic cycle, his sleeper-hit saga of an upstate New York clan that is feeling the fissures in the contemporary American Dream as acutely as Willy Loman’s family did in Arthur Miller’s “Death Of A Salesman.”
Previous installments in Nelson’s exploration of epochal events include 2010’s “That Hopey Changey Thing,” which takes place on the night of that year’s midterm elections; and 2011’s “Sweet And Sad,” a survey of the 10th anniversary of 9/11 that also opened on that day. Set around the dinner table, each play intimately explores family dynamics in the context of current events via the Apple siblings and their ailing older uncle, whose care became an issue in last year’s “Sorry” – set on the morning of Election Day, 2012.

Though each play can stand on its own, for those who’d like to experience the entirety of the series’ tight ensemble work the Public is restaging –with higher ticket prices – its productions of the first three Apple Family Plays in the month before “Regular Singing” opens.
