I, also, am new to this group. I have read this book twice and it’s in my library. What a book! The courage she had, as well as her depth of knowledge kept her going. Her fear, though, must have been horrid to live with. I’m glad you chose this book and look forward to seeing you all on Thursday.
I loved the Personal Librarian so much I decided to see if these 2 authors had created another book together – they did and it’s called “The first ladies”. “The first ladies” was just as good as “The Personal Librarian.” I look forward to the book discussion on Thursday.
Very much enjoyed the book. To maintain the life of a privileged white person and also carry the risk of being “found out” and lose her job. Understandable the pressure she lived each day.
This is my first on-line book club but I am looking forward to sharing with others with similar interests.
I was unaware of the relationship between Morgan and Belle. Being raised in the South I sympathize with her need to hide her identity as well as the inner conflict it must have presented.
I admire her ability to walk the tight line between family and her own desires both intellectually and romantically as well as socially.
I read this book with another book club I belong to and I was so taken with Belle and all she accomplished. She was dealing with so much pressure – from her family and from society and from herself – she was brave and bold and brilliant! I so wish I had been made aware of the Morgan Library – I am a native New Yorker, but moved away more than 50 years ago. I grew up close to the Metropolitan Museum, but never did know about or visit the Morgan. What a missed opportunity.
