I enjoyed the story and am now watching the series. The book provided a wonderful view of the lifestyle and culture of some islanders from Jamaica. In this book we see the characters develop, survive, and thrive despite the obstacles they face. We read about the infamous black cake which is made for the holidays and other celebrations. I look forward to trying it one day.
Hi everyone, this should be an excellent discussion!! Thanks to everyone who voted for the book. I too have had back cake and it’s something to behold, a taste you will remember forever. I’ll only say the S—— we live with throughout our lives WOW!
My wish for all of you is that you have a loving spirit, a joyful heart, peace of mind and to find out who we truly are,
Many thanks to Nichole and Johnny for all they do to keep us on track.
I have finished! And yes, there was marathon reading involved. I won’t do a spoiler alert, but will admit the “whodunnit “ was not who I thought! This will definitely be a book for keeping and rereading. Looking forward to group discussion.
Finding the topic of this book very different from the usual novel, I look forward to reading it every day. So far the characters are very refreshing depicting real life and not just carbon copies found in numerous novels. Normally I can predict the ending of a book but this one has me thinking of the many possible outcomes which propels me to want to finish it quickly.
So far, Black Cake is an exciting novel! The title, itself, evotes curiosity! In Part 1, we meet the Bennetts who have family problems, including; secrets, dissapearance, and mistaken identities. Part 2 begins to unravel mysteries that have plagued the family for decades and leaves the reader wanting for more. The biggest mystery is the traditional black cake! What is the significance of it?
This novel has become a “page turner.”
I totally agree with you as I had to finish the book dues to my curiosity as to who did what!
Hi Carol. A black cake is a Jamaican spice cake which is very important to that culture. I don’t know how far along in the book you are and whether spoilers matter to you or not, so I don’t want to give my take on the title’s meaning. But, if you notice, the black cake is like a character.
I’ve read further because I got caught up in the story. The mom had a lot of secrets. My question is what happened to Elena mom?
Am still waiting for my book to arrive!! Sounds like I may be having a night or two of marathon reading to “catch up”!
