Shebah, 68 – My Blueprint for Longevity and Pain Management
Meet Shebah Carfagna. One of the 2025 Senior Planet Sponsored Athletes, she’ll be sharing updates on her health and wellness journey through the rest of this year. Get to know more about Shebah from her first blog post. Learn about her training goals and motivations below.
At 68, I stand stronger than ever, not just in body, but in spirit. My journey has been anything but easy, but through it all, I’ve learned how resilience, mental toughness, and perseverance help you survive and thrive. I believe longevity isn’t a gift given to the lucky—it’s something you build every single day.
Resilience: Turning Adversity into Fuel
Life didn’t hand me an easy script. As a single mom raising a son with autism while balancing a demanding career, stress could have consumed me. But instead of folding under pressure, I turned it into fuel.
… resilience isn’t about avoiding hard times; it’s about finding strength inside them.
Those pre-dawn workouts with fellow professionals became my sanctuary. I created structure, found community, and built the emotional strength I needed to keep showing up. It taught me that resilience isn’t about avoiding hard times; it’s about finding strength inside them.
When the world shut down during COVID-19, I re-branded Panache Fitness and took our sessions online, because I knew people still needed community and care. That pivot wasn’t just a business decision, it was a practice in resilience. Life will throw curveballs, but I’ve learned you can adjust without losing your purpose.
Mental Toughness: My Secret
Mental fitness is just as critical as physical training. That’s why when I co-created the Ageless Workout Method, I made sure it included more than just movement. We train the body, yes, but also the brain and spirit.
Research supports what I live: mindfulness, cognitive drills, and mental challenges keep the brain sharp and combat chronic stress. the kind that accelerates aging. I believe in the power of neuroplasticity and emotional grit.
I also live by this statement: “Aging is a gift—not a decline, but a redesign.”
I don’t let ageist narratives write my story. I teach my clients to adapt to life’s obstacles rather than let them derail their goals. Mental toughness is seeing opportunity where others see limitation.
Perseverance in Pain Management
In 2018, I faced a total hip replacement. Some might have slowed down. I chose to gear up. I spent a full year pre-conditioning my body through intentional movement and strength training. That preparation paid off: eight days post-surgery, I was back teaching aqua classes. Two weeks later, I was flying across the country to support my son at the Special Olympics.
That was not luck, that was pre-habilitation. Preparing my body in advance reduced my pain and accelerated my healing. I didn’t wait for recovery. I facilitated it.
Don’t allow the condition to manage you. You manage the condition.
Today, I combine medical fitness, eco-therapy, and mindfulness to help others navigate pain holistically. I teach clients that they can live with chronic conditions without being defined by them. My words to them are, “Don’t allow the condition to manage you. You manage the condition.”
My Framework
If you’re reading this and wondering how to begin, let me share my blueprint:
- Start where you are:
Walk. Stretch. Breathe. Show up. Small steps taken consistently create big change. - Train your mind as much as your muscles:
Add coordination drills, learn something new, or simply sit in silence. Mental fitness builds lasting vitality. - Pre-habilitate:
Don’t wait for an injury or surgery to get stronger. Prepare your body now. It’s your insurance policy for life. - Find your tribe:
Community changes everything. My early-morning groups gave me accountability, purpose, and joy. Share your journey with others
The Legacy I’m Living
I don’t just talk about longevity — I live it. Every ache, triumph, and challenge has shaped me into who I am. I don’t chase youth. I honor my evolution.
Resilience. Mental toughness. Perseverance. That’s my formula. That’s my fire.
And I’m just getting started.

Hello,
Wow, sorry to hear that must be difficult! Perhaps you can check with your clinical team to explore if upper body and/or sitting exercises would be appropriate for you in the future.
I love this – I wish you lived in Newark, NJ . I am starting to become part of the 4am club ♀️.
Hi Sharon,
Good for you! It’s important to get an early start on the day!
