Get Real about Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence or “AI” has been dominating the tech world recently; older adults are curious about it – and want info.
In fact, getting AI savvy was among the top responses when we asked Senior Planet participants to share their 2024 technology resolutions.
From the general, “I want to learn more about AI” to the specific “[I want to] use ChatGPT each week and direct it to analyze [sic] the US Stock Market” – it’s clear older adults are eager to enter the AI age in words and pictures.

Why AI?
Katherine Lam Bellacero, Curriculum Manager at Senior Planet explains “The growth of AI has – and will continue to have – great effects on how we age. Our goal is to make sure everyone leaves our programs feeling more informed about how they might want to (or how they already) engage with AI.”

In the classes, experienced Senior Planet trainers explain AI tools that have been part of our everyday lives and explore cutting-edge applications of the technology. We look at ways we can use AI tools to help with a variety of tasks from writing emails to creating artistic images. We also share tips for identifying AI-generated content, best practices for using AI, and how to stay safe.
“My favorite thing about teaching these programs are the people,” says Senior Planet Trainer Zeke Tijerina. “Some are cautious and want to understand it better while others are enthusiastic and ready to jump in. Every class is a new experience.”
Deirdre Lee serves as Director of Virtual Program Experiences for Senior Planet from AARP (formerly managing the organization’s licensing program). Hello, I’m a teacher and trainer of how to use ChatGPT and things like that. I was reading in your comments above that you say that you do not record your trainings. I gently ask why that is, because if you gave the trainings over Zoom or Google Meet and you had Fathom, which is an AI note-taker, you could automatically generate a link to that particular class and obviously you can create a library of classes that people can watch. So I just wanted to put that out there.

I am one of those people who have missed your AI programs and found an e-mail that advertised an upcoming workshop, but was also delighted to find imbedded within the body of the class sign up several previous AI classes that had been recorded. I was able to finish two of the hour-long presentations, but the next day I went back to complete the 3rd – and it was gone! Why? I am unable to find the class listed anywhere on this site.
Please send your query to info@seniorplanet.org or call the Senior Planet hotline at 888-713-3495
I would like to see all of the AI programs. It says they were Zoom calls so were they not recorded so they could be replayed? If not, why not? What a waste of resources and information if not.

This is regarding your AI zoom classes. I am just reading about them in your June issue we received four days ago. Obviously, I missed several, plus they are not at a good time. I am like others, hoping to see them at a later date. It is a bit surprising that your organization, pretty tech savvy, can’t find a way of offering them at a later date. You have convinced me to learn more about AI, but let me down at the start!

Please re-run this series soon as AI feels like it will impact all of our lives. Sorry I missed the first three sessions. Thank you and thanks for all you do.
If you go to the main menu on the website and search under Online Classes for Artificial Intelligence you will see there are a few classes on Tuesdays at 10 am EST so you have a shot at getting in the classes on May 7, 14 and 21.
There’s also a separate listing here.
