Music to our Ears!

Senior Planet offers many music related programs and events.  Here’s a success story about one of them.

A 3rd-generation Cajun fiddler from Ville Platte, Louisiana, Ann Vidrine (age 63) began her career as a professional musician in 1989. Since then, her journey has been chock-full of impressive performances and accolades but like many others, Ann suddenly lost her career during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My bookings calendar went blank in March of 2020. It was such a life altering shock to suddenly be unemployed, without warning, without any place allowing performances in the foreseeable future,” she recalls. “My attitude regarding myself aging was negative. I felt I was washed up, finished after my career was shut down suddenly.”

Music to the rescue

Then, Ann found Senior Planet’s music programs. She started by joining the Open Mic nights (held every other Tuesday at 6pm ET), then branched into Songwriting Nights (held every other Wednesday at 7pm ET).

“The goal of programs like Open Mic and Songwriting Night is to provide older adults the opportunity, technical knowledge, and encouragement to share their music on a digital platform,” says Nicole Alcime, Virtual Program Experiences Manager at Senior Planet.  “Many folks also join simply to enjoy the music – all are welcome.”

Ann is now a regular performer at both programs, and she has written 14 new songs in the last four months.

“I enjoy the opportunity to showcase original works as well as experience the works of other songwriters,” Ann says. “I can’t express enough what this experience has done for me. I really felt like COVID had erased me for good. But I now have a new purpose, that of songwriter, and that is something I can do for the rest of my life.”

  1. Ann is a phenomenal songwriter. Her songs teach me and touch me in a way that is remarkable. The combination of her lyrics and melodies along with her amazing guitar work and her voice makes her unique and wonderful. I just want more!!

  2. Reading that Ann Vidrine is a 3rd generation Cajun fiddler has increased my admiration for her. I have already been a big fan of her song writing skills, both with her lyrics and musicality. One of my life’s bucket list was to go to Cajun country to dance to Cajun music. In 2007, my husband and I drove home to California from Florida and made a special stop at a Cajun Festival in Lafayette. We had a blast! Looking forward to more songs from you Ann.

  3. Yes love your web site, more variety is great! I am having a problem at my local Senior Planet Denver. Cannot use the printer per Page the director there. no reason, just was told no! IS there a problem I am not aware of? I actually have a new HP Desk Jet 2700e printer I would love to donate. Am afraid the director will not allow it to be used there. What are your thoughts, Thanks a million, Dave in Denver

    1. Sorry you were disappointed, but Senior Planet Centers are administrative centers/places of business as well as walk in centers. The printers are for office use only and not for public use, not even for one sheet. However most public libraries have printers they maintain specifically for public use for little or no cost.
