Durante mi presentación de atleta patrocinado de Senior Planet del 21 de mayo de 2025, mencioné cuatro lecciones clave que he aprendido a lo largo de las últimas cuatro décadas. Estas cuatro lecciones me han mostrado que el progreso tiene menos que ver con ser el corredor más rápido o levantar las pesas más pesadas y más con el acercamiento a su cuerpo y actitud. Han formado mi entrenamiento, mi salud en general, y mi relación con el entrenamiento físico.
1) Andar lento para ir rápido
Moverse lentamente y desarrollar constancia a lo largo del tiempo es lo que le permitirá ir más rápido después.
Es tentador tratar de apresurar los resultados. Queremos velocidad ahora, fuerza ahora, resistencia ahora. La verdad es que uno solo puede lograr progreso duradero siendo la tortuga, no la liebre. Estoy convencido que de no haber sentado bases al empezar a correr lentamente y distancias cortas cuando inicié mi viaje fitness, nunca habría podido correr las distancias largas que con el tiempo logré correr.
Moverse lentamente y desarrollar constancia a lo largo del tiempo es lo que le permitirá ir más rápido después, ya sea al correr o levantar pesas. La impaciencia a menudo conduce a lesiones. El control lleva al progreso. Vaya lentamente; con el tiempo, se sorprenderá de lo rápido que puede ser.
2) Empezar ligero para llegar a lo pesado
El uso de pesas ligeras, en particular en el caso de los adultos mayores, permite dominar la forma y entrenar el sistema nervioso.
Levantar pesas ligeras (usted define lo que es ligero) al empezar un programa con pesas o de potencia le permite desarrollar una base de estabilidad y entrena a su cuerpo para comenzar a generar nuevos músculos, potencia y huesos. El uso de pesas ligeras, en particular en el caso de los adultos mayores, permite dominar la forma y entrenar el sistema nervioso. Así es como se sientan las bases para ganar fuerza y potencia sin lesiones. Cuando entrena de manera inteligente y empieza con pesas ligeras, será más seguro y efectivo levantar las pesadas al momento que las ligeras se vuelvan muy fáciles.
3) Competir solo consigo mismo
Compararse con otros roba la alegría y frena el progreso. En la era de las redes sociales y la cultura del gimnasio, es fácil mirar alrededor y sentir que se está quedando atrás. No hay una sola forma de estar en forma. Cuando se compara con otros, es fácil perder la motivación o entrenar sin cuidado.
Enfóquese en ser más fuerte, más móvil y tener más energía que el mes pasado.
Competir consigo mismo es la única manera de crecer. Su progreso, sus reglas. Monitoree su progreso. Enfóquese en ser más fuerte, más móvil y tener más energía que el mes pasado. Esto le hace un ganador.
4) Escuche a su cuerpo
El dolor… no es una insignia de honor.
Es posible que esta sea la lección más importante. El sistema nervioso está afinado al máximo y siempre nos da pistas sobre cómo estamos. Al principio, lo ignoraba. Ignoraba el dolor y desestimaba las señales de alerta. Con el tiempo, comencé a respetar lo que me decía mi cuerpo. La molestia muscular es normal. Sin embargo, el dolor no es una insignia de honor. Escuchar a su cuerpo (ya sea que le pida cambiar la rutina o parar) es lo que le permite seguir andando en el largo plazo.
Con el tiempo, escuché a mi cuerpo y dejé de correr y levantar pesas pesadas, lo cual me permitió continuar con entrenamiento aeróbico diario en una bicicleta estacionaria y levantar pesas ligeras para alcanzar fuerza y potencia. Entrenar de manera inteligente significa saber cuándo detenerse.

La condición física es un viaje constante, no una carrera de velocidad. Estas lecciones no son solo estrategias de entrenamiento, sino principios para la salud sustentable y el crecimiento personal. Para recorrer este camino a largo plazo, necesita sabiduría, no ego.
