It’s Miss Sophie’s 90th birthday, and just as in years past, she and her butler are hosting an elaborate dinner party for her friends — who by now are imaginary friends. It’s a recipe for comic chaos and a wonderful look at resilience in older age. Miss Sophie won’t let anything stop her from enjoying her life, even if her friends are all gone.

One of many gems you can find on YouTube, “Dinner for One” is an annual New Year’s Eve TV favorite in many European counties. In Germany, it’s estimated that about 50 percent of the population is watching it on any given NYE. This is a colorized version of the 1963 original.
