Open House New York Weekend

Ever marveled at a building and wondered, “What’s it like in there?” Chances are, it’s among the private spaces and interiors, cultural sites, landmarks and other design wonders open to the public during the annual Open House New York Weekend. The weekend is October 11 and 12 but this year’s sites are being announced today, October 30, and free spots go fast.

A citywide event presented by the architecture lovers at Open House New York, OHNY Weekend is now in its 12th year and offers more than 300 different ways to appreciate New York via tours, talks and other special programs.

The sites in this year’s celebration range from architect Eero Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport to the offices of the leading crowdfunding site Kickstarter, which is housed in the repurposed Eberhard Faber Pencil Factory in Brooklyn.

Many “open access” sites are free of charge, but due to the popularity of OHNY Weekend, several of the most fascinating sites and tours require advance registration as well as a $5 fee. RSVPing is the surefire way of guaranteeing your spot. (Note: Head-of-line privileges for “open access” sites can be obtained by purchasing an OHNY Weekend Passport, which costs $150.) Before the reservation process opens October 1 at 11am, you have a day to “plan your weekend” by perusing the offerings at OHNY Weekend’s highly searchable site.

Free First Performances at the Public Theater

The Public Theater is always looking for ways to provide New Yorkers with free theatrical performances – a case in point is the long-running summer series Shakespeare In The Park. This fall, as the season gets underway tomorrow with “The Fortress Of Solitude” – the musical adaptation of Jonathan Lethem’s best-selling novel – the Public is launching its latest effort, the First Performance Free For All initiative.

First Performance is a mobile ticket lottery that, in collaboration with New York’s popular theater app Today Tix, gives theatergoers a chance at free seats to opening night for every show of the 2014-2015 season.

It’s easy: Just click here,  download the “Today Tix” app to your Android or iPhone, iPad or Kindle, and follow the instructions. The next play in the series, Suzan Lori-Parks’ “Father Comes Home From the Wars, Parts 1, 2 & 3” opens on October 14.
