The Shutdown in Memes

In the mood to pillory some politicians? That job used to belong to editorial cartoonists like Pullitzer Prize-winner Pat Oliphant. But today, anyone who feels inspired can poke mad fun at Congress by creating and uploading a meme, or just sharing one –  you’ve probably seen at least a few shared  on your Facebook wall. (Click here to find out what a meme is). And because memes can go viral, these pithy pieces of political humor can reach a whole lot more eyeballs than Pat Oliphant’s cartoons do. Two of the top sites for uploading and making memes, Reddit.com and Imgur.com, have more than a billion views a day.

It’s not surprising that the government shutdown has spawned vast numbers of memes, so today, one week in to it, let’s take a look at some of the most viral political memes of the season – from the tech-inspired to cute-attack.
