Courses

Senior Planet offers a range of free 5- and 10-week digital technology courses at our Exploration Center for people age 60 and up. Most courses meet twice per week. Registration takes place on a quarterly basis in person only at the center, located at 127 West 25th Street in Manhattan.

The winter quarter runs January 9 — March 17. See below for registration info.

    Registration for winter courses will be held in person on Wednesday, January 4th, and Thursday, January 5th.  All courses are free.

    How to Register

    • Registration is in person only at the Senior Planet Exploration Center.
    • Please note that you can only be enrolled in one course per quarter.
    • New members must fill out a Senior Planet membership form, including contact information and basic demographic data.
    • You’ll be notified on the day you register if you can be placed in your requested class or have been wait listed.
    • Wait listed members will be contacted if and when a space becomes available.
    • During the registration period, please check the course status noted above. Courses that have filled will be noted as FULL and updated as often as possible. You can still register after a course becomes full, but you will be wait listed.

  • BEYOND THE BASICS *

    10-week course – Winter quarter

    • Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:15 – 11:30
    • Mondays & Wednesdays, 11:45 – 1:00

    This PC-based course expands on the concepts and skills taught in the Computer Basics course and covers use of the Internet as an everyday resource for practical and enriching activities for socialization, entertainment and life-management. You’ll learn about social networking, online shopping, online banking, health management, entertainment, and how to use the Internet for different types of research. You’ll also learn the basics of social networking, how to protect your personal information, and ways to explore and cultivate your interests online. This course is a good opportunity to raise your comfort level and expand your ability to use computers to improve and enrich your daily life.

    Computer experience prerequisite: Some comfort with using email, navigating websites and searching for information on the Internet.

  • BLOGGING WORKSHOP SERIES*

    5-week series – Winter quarter, begins February 13th.

    • Mondays & Wednesdays, 2:00 – 3:15

    In this five-week hands on desktop workshop series, a Senior Planet trainer and experienced blogger will walk you through the basics of starting your own blog.  Members will receive an introduction to the content-management program WordPress, learn how to create blogs, and begin writing creative posts!

    Prerequisites:  You’ll need to feel comfortable working with computers and have your own email address.

  • COMPUTER BASICS FOR OLDER ADULTS*

    10-week course – Winter quarter

    • Mondays & Wednesdays, 3:30 – 4:45
    • Tuesdays & Thursdays, 11:45 – 1:00

    In this PC-based course, you’ll learn the basics of how to operate a computer and navigate the Internet in ways that can enrich your life.  During the course, you’ll learn how to use email, search the Internet for information, access sources of entertainment, and connect to people, organizations and interests that matter to you.

    Computer experience prerequisite:  None. This course is designed for people who have never used a computer or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

  • CREATING YOUR OWN WEBSITE WITH WIX.COM*

    5-week course – Winter quarter

    • Mondays & Wednesdays, 2:00 – 3:15

    Our instructors will walk you through everything you need to know in order to create your own beautiful, professional and functional website.

    Computer experience prerequisite: You’ll need to feel comfortable working with computers and have your own email address; be able to fill out online forms, do basic web searches, and upload and download documents and photographs with some assistance; and, most important, have a great idea for a website!

  • CREATING YOUR OWN WEBSITE WITH WIX.COM - FOR ENTREPRENEURS*

    5-week course  – Winter quarter

    • Fridays, 1:30 – 3:30

    Our instructors will walk small business owners through everything they need to know in order to create a professional and functional website. Since this course is targeted towards those interested in developing a professional website, priority will be given to small business owners and those interested in entrepreneurial endeavors.

    Computer experience prerequisite: You’ll need to feel comfortable working with computers and have your own email address; be able to fill out online forms, do basic web searches, and upload and download documents and photographs with some assistance; and, most important, have a great idea for a website!

  • ETSY AND E-COMMERCE FOR ENTREPRENEURS

    In this course you will explore the online world of e-commerce, learning the ins and outs of marketing your own goods online. You will be introduced to a number of popular e-commerce sites including Etsy.com, where you can build a page to sell handicrafts, and eBay.com, an online auction house for your unused collectibles.

  • EXPLORE SOCIAL NETWORKING

    5-week course (1 session per week)

    This informal workshop series serves as a great introduction to the most popular online social networking sites. It will cover Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn and more, and will focus on privacy settings and online “netiquitte.”  If you’re curious about social networking, nervous about trying it or just wondering what it’s all about,  this course will be great for you.

    Computer experience prerequisite: Ability to use email comfortably, navigate websites, search for information on the Internet or a willingness to just listen in and participate in the conversations.

  • FREE YOUR PHOTOS*

    5-week course – Winter quarter, begins February 17th

    • Fridays, 3:30 – 4:45

    This slightly more advanced digital photography course will lead you step by step thorough the process of creating a personalized photo album.
    Note: If you wish to print your photo book you will have to cover that cost by paying the fee directly to the online service “Shutterfly.” (Book costs range from $15 to $50.) You can create an online album if you do not wish to print a book.

    Computer experience prerequisite: You need to already be able to use a computer to send and receive emails, organize files, navigate websites and shop online.

    Other requirements: Access to a digital camera or smartphone, the cable to connect it to the computer, and a memory card for the camera. It would also be very helpful if you have at least one USB drive to work with.

  • GENEALOGY SEMINAR

    10-week course  (1 session per week)

    All levels of family-history enthusiasts will learn (and share) genealogy tips and tricks. Discover better ways to find ancestors, save family stories, make sense of Internet sites, overcome “brick walls” and complete their family trees. This interactive class is great for the beginner and those who have attended earlier classes.

    About the Guest Instructor: Bertis is an avid genealogist who has been searching his own and others’ family histories for 25 years. He is currently SAGE’s Manager of Volunteer Programs, in addition to coordinating programs for The SAGE Center.

  • INTERGENERATIONAL MEDIA LITERACY PROGRAM

    This course brings high school students and seniors together to explore digital media messages about age, and to collaborate on creative video responses. Senior Planet is partnering with the youth education program The LAMP (Learning about Multi-Media Project) and public broadcasting station WNET. We’ll be creating a short documentary about the program during the course; the documentary team will film the workshops and conduct interviews with students. (If you have videography or editing skills, we need your help!)

    Computer experience prerequisite:
 General Participants need basic computer skills and the ability to work in a team setting with younger people.

    Documentary Team needs experience in videomaking or editing; a more intensive time commitment is necessary.

  • INTERNET BASICS FOR OLDER ADULTS — CHROME DEVICES*

    10-week course – Winter quarter

    • Mondays & Wednesdays, 11:45 – 1:00

    Chrome Devices are fast, secure and cost-effective computers that run the Google Chrome operating system. Chrome devices look and function much like traditional laptops or PCs and are great for beginners who just want to use the Internet without a lot of bells and whistles (or troublesome issues!). They are also significantly less expensive than other devices and offer a great option if you are on a tight budget. In this course, you’ll learn the basics of how to use Chrome devices to navigate the Internet in ways that can enrich your life. During the course, you’ll learn how to use email; search the Internet for information; access sources of entertainment; and connect to people, organizations and interests that matter to you.

    Computer experience prerequisite:  None. This course is designed for people who have never used a computer or have very little experience and want a solid introduction.

  • INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY*

    5 week course – Winter quarter

    • Fridays, 3:30 – 4:45

    This course covers the basics of using a digital camera, transferring pictures to a computer, sharing pictures online with friends and relatives and printing pictures at a neighborhood photo kiosk or drugstore.

    Note: Digital cameras are provided on the premises for use in the class.

    Computer experience prerequisite:  Participants should have basic computer skills and be comfortable using a mouse, keyboard, and have some understanding of file management on PCs.

  • INTRODUCTION TO THE NEXUS TABLET

    Get an introduction to Google’s popular Nexus tablet. Nexus tablets are less expensive than iPads and work well with all things Google (like Gmail). With hands-on support, you’ll learn the basics of the tablet and how to use it to browse the web, use email, download apps, watch video, take pictures, connect online and more.

    Note: Nexus tablets will be provided for use at Senior Planet.

    Computer experience prerequisite:  This is a beginner class and will be geared toward new learners who are not already comfortable using a computer.

  • IPAD BASICS FOR IPAD OWNERS

    10-week course

    Got an iPad? Bring it to this workshop, where a trainer will show you how to care for and maintain your device, manage maintenance and updates, personalize and adjust your settings, navigate the world of apps and get all you can out of your iPad.

    Note: participants in this course must own an iPad and bring it each week.

  • IPAD BASICS FOR OLDER ADULTS*

    Get an introduction to the popular Apple tablet. With hands-on support, you’ll learn the basics of the iPad and how to use it to browse the web, use email, download apps, watch video, take pictures, connect online and more.

    Note: iPads will be provided for use at Senior Planet.

    Computer experience prerequisite: This is a course that is appropriate for absolute beginners.

  • JOB SEARCHING IN THE DIGITAL AGE

    In this course, students learn the skills and techniques necessary to seek paid or volunteer employment in the “digital age.” They define and create goals for their job search, learn how to present themselves safely and appropriately online, and are taught how to navigate trusted online sources for job and opportunity listings.  They will be guided through complicated issues unique to older adults who are looking for employment – for example how to earn an income without losing benefits and how to protect themselves against ageism in the workforce.

  • MICROSOFT WORD AND FILE MANAGEMENT

    5-week course
    Not available this quarter

    This course covers Microsoft Word, the most widely used word processing program. You will learn basic skills such as creating and editing documents, along with some intermediate skills such as table creation and the use of templates for documents including resumes and brochures.  The class will also give you some tools on how more easily to retrieve stored files on your computer.

    Computer experience prerequisite: Basic computer skills including the ability to type on a keyboard and navigate with a mouse.

  • PINTEREST FOR BEGINNERS

    Pinterest for Beginners is a 5-week course designed for those participants who have completed Computer Basics and Beyond the Basics. During the 5 weeks, students will create, customize, and share their Pinterest boards in a collaborative and activity-oriented setting.  When the course ends, students will spend time presenting Pinterest boards to the rest of the class.

  • READY, SET, BANK: ONLINE BANKING MADE EASY

    Ready, Set, Bank is a new program designed to help older adults access the benefits of online and mobile banking.  The course includes a series of video lesson plans that explain online and mobile banking basics.  Members will learn how to navigate mobile banking apps, set up alerts about account activity to help protect from identity theft, and enroll in direct deposit for social security or retirement benefits.

  • SENIOR PLANET - MONEY MATTERS*

    10-week course – Winter quarter

    • Tuesdays & Thursdays, 2:00 – 3:15

    Learn about smart financial habits, introduce yourself to online resources, develop skills to help manage your money, reduce spending, and help identify income opportunities outside the traditional workforce. By the end of this course, participants will have the know-how to maximize their incomes, make a budget, do online price comparison, and leverage online resources to save money and earn extra income.

  • SENIOR PLANET UNIVERSITY - IPAD BASICS*

    5-week course – Begins February 14th

    • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:15 – 11:30

    In this 5-week introductory course, Senior Planet members will receive access to our brand new online learning platform dubbed ‘Senior Planet U.’  Throughout the course, members will work with a mixture of learning tools including videos, digital supplements, and written material – all meant to confer basic knowledge of the iPad.  We are seeking motivated individuals who will actively participate in the feedback process and help shape the platform going forward.  All registrants will receive FREE access to the platform and access to all available content.  Help us shape the future of Senior Planet!

  • SOCIAL NETWORKING FOR OLDER ADULTS

    In this online social networking course, you’ll create your own Facebook account, learn how to connect with friends and family on Facebook, and explore Twitter.  This course is best for those who have already taken the Senior Planet Beyond the Basics course, or for those who already know how to use email and the Internet and search for information, and understand how to protect their personal information online.

  • SOCIAL NETWORKING FOR PROFESSIONALS AND JOB-SEEKERS

    It is becoming increasingly important to have an online presence in today’s professional world. Learn how to navigate the tricky social norms of online social networking, including digital etiquette on popular social networking sites, how to create a LinkedIn profile and use other social networking resources to find jobs or enhance your professional presence in the workforce.

    Computer experience prerequisite: Ability to use email comfortably, navigate websites, search for information on the Internet.

  • TEAM SENIOR PLANET*

    10-week course – Winter quarter

    • Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays 8:30 – 10:00
    • Mondays, Wednesdays,  1:00 – 2:30 & Fridays, 11:45 – 1:15

    Participants will participate in a mix of aerobic, low-impact, and strength training exercises, and learn how to use the Fitbit to track their movements and heart rate. Fitbits will be loaned to each participant.

    Sessions will be held at and around the Senior Planet Exploration Center. Instructors will teach proper exercise technique and body awareness. Individuals at all levels of fitness are welcome.

    Prerequisites: You’ll need to feel comfortable working with computers and have your own email address; and membership ($25 per year for adults aged 62+) to the NYC Parks Recreation Centers is required.  A doctor’s note is recommended.
